Hey y’all!
I want to develop THE BEST strategies, tips, and tricks to get referees on your side (without them knowing)... That’s a topic I will be exploring more until I consider myself an expert in it (so maybe it won’t take that long 😉).
I like to think of myself as an expert in the role that statistics play in athletics and what mindsets athletes should have towards statistics to increase their impact, fun, and happiness in their sport.
But, I want to understand more of what makes referees hate players (so I can avoid that) and what makes referees enjoy players (so I can do that more). I want to become an expert and create the best guide for talking with referees.
Why?
Well, I recently watched a coach speak 0 words with a ref for an entire basketball game. ZERO WORDS! And believe it or not, the referees continued to make the same mistakes because no one was correcting them (or at a minimum making them aware).
I’m also thinking about coaching someday, so I want to know how to interact with referees so my team gets more calls…
With that being said, let’s get into today’s newsletter…
Refs are human beings, too.
Yes, be kind to refs. Yes, treat them with respect. But also understand the influence you can have on them as a coach or as a player.
No, you won’t enjoy every call they make. No, you can’t dictate how they call things.
But, you can influence them in a way that benefits your team.
Too many coaches and players DON’T avoid the extreme ends of talking to the refs.
Never talk to the ref for the entire game and have no influence on them.
Or, talk to them the entire game and it’ll leave you over focusing on what they’re doing (instead of what you can be doing).
There’s nothing wrong with asking, “Can you watch the hook?” Or yelling, “Three seconds!”
Refs are human beings, too. They make mistakes. It’s your job to make them aware of these mistakes in a respectful way… Unless, of course, they’re in your favor. ;)
See you next week,
Dylan
